Plant a Vegetable Garden for Earth Day!

Earth Day, Garden, Gardening, Watercolor, Edible Garden, Vegetable Garden, Veggies

Did you know fruits and vegetables often travel an average of 1,500 miles before being consumed? Every armful of tomatoes, peaches or grapes that you harvest from your garden means less water somewhere else, and less fossil fuels, harmful pesticides and energy consumption.

Our Favorite Trees to plant for Earth Day

Olive Trees (Olea europaea) – Olive trees are extremely tough and can withstand heat and drought. Their presence in the garden adds a Mediterranean touch, and during hot summers olive trees bare fruit, ripening from green to black as the winter nears. Fruitless varieties are available, for those who do not want the harvest, but want the Mediterranean look and drought tolerance.[su_spacer size=”10″][su_spacer][su_spacer size=”10″][su_spacer][/su_spacer]

[su_spacer size=”10″][su_spacer][su_spacer size=”10″][su_spacer][/su_spacer]

Marina Strawberry Tree (Arbutus ‘Marina’) – A medium sized evergreen tree with low water needs, beautiful four-season interest and easy care.  Gardeners appreciate its striking bark, evergreen leaves and clusters of blossoms.

Western Redbud (Cercis occidentalis) – A small California Native tree that is excellent for small spaces, courtyards and patios. It requires very low water while making a bold landscape statement. In spring their blossoms are bright pink, eventually forming heart-shaped leaves that redden in fall. Their compact size, resilience and beauty make them a great choice for the garden. [su_spacer size=”10″][su_spacer][su_spacer size=”10″][su_spacer][/su_spacer]

Bay Trees (Laurus nobilis) – This small, evergreen tree is highly aromatic and prized for its culinary benefits. Bay Leaf trees are drought tolerant once established and can thrive in containers, making them a wonderful addition to small spaces.
