Do you have any Rose Trees?
Hi Betty,
During the cool winter months roses are generally sold in what is called a “bare-root” or “dormant” stage. I currently have about a thousand of these bare-root roses, spanning probably a hundred different varieties. However, these are all bush forms. Due to dehydration issues that are unique to tree roses, these do not perform well when planted in a “bare-root” or “dormant” stage. Instead, these tree rose forms are best planted when they are in full leaf and flower, which begins in earnest about March. At that season we will have lots of tree roses.
Hopefully, you can hold on until then.

Do you have thr rose Sunset Celebration?
Hi Janet,
Yes, we do. We just received these about two weeks ago, but have already sold several. We have about five left.

Do you have the rose “Easter Basket” or “Fired Up”
Hi Ken,
I don’t at the moment, but will have them shortly. ‘Fired up’ is definitely in our five-gallon rose program for this spring/summer, but that does not begin for another 6-8 weeks. ‘Fired Up’ is contracted and being grown for us right now. ‘Easter Basket’ is also probably going to be in our spring summer rose program as well, but is not contracted. All that means is that it isn’t reserved for us, but will almost certainly will either have it on hand or can easily special order it for you if for some reason it is not in stock.
Early March would be the best time to check back on both of those.
Good rose growing!
Ron
What is your best recommendation for a climbing rose that is a fairly constant bloomer?

My favorite rose ever has been the Hybrid Tea Sutter’s Gold. It’s an old, old rose, and I’ve not been able to locate any over the last 30 years or so. Any ideas?
Hi Diane,
I remember ‘Sutter’s Gold’. We grew it in my garden for several years when I lived and gardened in the Los Angeles area. But that was a long time ago. It was first introduced to the U.S. in 1950 and in fact, it was an All-America Rose Selection winner at the time – the highest honor a rose can achieve. I am afraid that you won’t likely find ‘Sutter’s Gold’ on the market today. It has been out of patent for many years and has been retired by the rose growers for a very long time. Rose growing and breeding is a continual process and every year a dozen or more new varieties are introduced to the market by the two or three growers/breeders. This means that each year a dozen of more varieties are also discontinued by these same growers. If they didn’t do this, they would never be able to manage their businesses successfully. But, this same introduction process also keeps a steady stream of new and exciting rose varieties flowing past us.
Such is the nature of the rose industry. Sorry to pass this information along, but probably best to keep ‘Sutter’s Gold’ in your memory and experiment with another new variety, or two, or three, or . . .
Good luck,
Ron
How large is the Julia Child Rose flower? I bought one but the flower was tiny. Did not expect that . Did I buy a dud?
Hi Eileen,
‘Julia Child’ should be quite a large flowered rose. Not only is it a large flower, it is one of the best roses ever developed in most rose experts opinions. It has great repeat bloom ability, good disease tolerance, is a strong grower, is shapely, has fragrance and a nice flower form. In my opinion it has almost everything one could want in a rose.
It doesn’t sound right if you had a very small flower. If it was only one flower or the very first flower of the year I would give it a bit more time. If you bought it at Roger’s Gardens you have a full year plant guarantees with absolutely no risk. I hope the plant was properly labelled and it is indeed ‘Julia Child’. If you are in the store, ours are in full bloom, so you might want to take a look at them and compare yours.

Do you carry the rose McClinton Tea?
Hi Kitty,
I am afraid we do not carry the ‘McClinton Tea’ rose. We probably have about the largest selection of roses anywhere in Southern California, but this is a rather uncommon Antique rose. We have access to a few hundred rose varieties, but not this one. Likely the only way you will be able to acquire this rose will be from an on-line mail-order rose specialist supplier. It will take some effort, but if you really want it you can probably order it in that manner. Just Google it and you might find a supplier.

Looking for Betty Boop, do you happen to have it in stock?
Unfortunately, we don’t have it in stock but if you call the store at 949.640.5800, a horticulturist can place a special order for you and it will arrive next week.
We have a small entry that is mostly shade. What type of plants would you recommend? As we are only here for the summer months which plants would require low maintenance and do well in the shade? Thank you for your response.
Frieda, I don’t see a mention as to where (what city) this shade garden is located. Location is important. I am making the assumption that you are nearby. Given that, many types of ferns, azaleas & camellias are classic and require only occasional mainentance. Add to that: Heuchera, Mondo Grass, Acanthus, Aralia, Chinese Bellflower & Gardenia, to name a few. The trick to growing most shade plants is to create a soft, loamy soil on the low side of the ph scale (Acid Planting Mix), regular water, good drainage and a regular fertilizing program.
If you are able to visit us, any of our horticulturists will be happy to show you these and others.
Hope to see you soon!
Hi, do you have David Austin’s climbing rose Wollerton Old Hall? Bare root is okay. Thanks.
Hello and thank you for inquiring with Roger’s Gardens,
Currently we are awaiting our shipment of “Early Season Roses” (our roses come early in pulp pot containers) which should be in very soon however David Austin roses are not available in bare root to us.
We should have a good selection to order by the end of January.
Feel free to call after the 15th and make a special order with anyone on our Outdoor Horticulture staff.
We look forward to your next visit,
Suzanne Hetrick
Would you happen to have Cynthia Brooke by Samuel McGredy or Golden Oldie by Harvey Davidson?
Unfortunately, we do not carry either of those roses at this time.
Do you have Gemini Roses
Unfortunately, we do not have Gemini but we do have similar roses like Cherry Parfait, Double Delight, or Princess Diana that you can order online for delivery in OC at shoprogersgardens.com or visit us in-store.
